The National Testing Agency (NTA) is expected to release the provisional answer keys and scanned images of OMR answer sheets for the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET-UG) 2026 by the end of this week. Over 24 lakh students appeared for the medical entrance exam on May 3, making it the largest sitting in the history of the examination. The release of the answer key is a crucial milestone, as it allows candidates to calculate their estimated scores and predict their All India Rank (AIR) before the official results are declared in June.

Once the link is live on neet.nta.nic.in, candidates can log in using their application number and date of birth. The NTA provides a window for students to challenge any answer they believe is incorrect. A non-refundable processing fee of INR 200 per challenged answer is typically charged. Experts who analyzed this year's paper suggested that the Biology section was largely NCERT-based, while the Physics section was slightly more calculation-intensive than last year, potentially leading to a marginal dip in the overall cutoffs for top-tier government medical colleges.

Dr. Vineet Joshi, a senior official at the NTA, stated that the agency is using advanced AI-based tools to verify the OMR sheets to eliminate any manual errors. 'Our priority is to maintain the integrity of the exam and ensure that the results are error-free. The challenge period is an essential part of this transparency,' he said. Following the resolution of challenges, a Final Answer Key will be published, which will serve as the basis for the 2026 NEET results.

For the 2026 session, there has been a significant increase in the number of seats available in government medical colleges, particularly in the states of Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, and Rajasthan. This expansion is part of the central government's initiative to improve the doctor-to-population ratio. Aspirants are advised to keep their admit cards handy and ensure their registered email IDs are active, as the NTA will also send the scanned OMR sheets directly to their inboxes.

Counseling for the 15% All India Quota (AIQ) seats will be conducted by the Medical Counselling Committee (MCC), while the remaining 85% state quota seats will be managed by respective state authorities. Students should begin gathering necessary documents such as domicile certificates, category certificates, and NEET admit cards to ensure a smooth transition into the counseling phase. The expected cutoff for the General category is predicted to hover around 715-720 for the top 100 ranks, though this remains speculative until the final data is released.
