JoSAA 2026: Round 1 Seat Allotment Results Out for IITs and NITs; Admissions Begin
Candidates can check their allotment status by logging into the JoSAA portal with their JEE Main application number and password. Upon checking the result, students are presented with three primary options: 'Freeze', 'Float', or 'Slide'. Those satisfied with their allotted seat must choose the 'Freeze' option and proceed with the online reporting, which includes document upload and payment of the seat acceptance fee. This is a critical step, as failure to pay the fee will lead to the cancellation of the allotted seat and the candidate's exit from the subsequent rounds.
The 'Float' option is intended for those who have been allotted a seat but wish to be considered for a higher-preference branch or institute in subsequent rounds. The 'Slide' option allows students to seek a better branch within the same institute they have been allotted. It is crucial for candidates to understand these choices thoroughly, as any error at this stage could lead to the forfeiture of their seat. "We advise students to read the JoSAA business rules carefully before clicking any buttons. A wrong choice now can affect their entire career trajectory," said Dr. Sunita Menon, an education consultant in New Delhi.
According to the initial data, the cut-offs for Computer Science Engineering (CSE) at top IITs like IIT Bombay, IIT Delhi, and IIT Madras remain exceptionally high, closing within the top 100-200 ranks. Interestingly, there is a visible trend of students opting for Data Science and Artificial Intelligence branches in newer IITs over traditional core branches in older ones. This shift reflects the changing demands of the global tech industry and the high placement packages associated with these new-age specializations.
The deadline for online reporting and fee payment for the first round is July 4, 2026. Failure to complete these steps within the stipulated time will result in the automatic cancellation of the allotted seat. JoSAA will conduct a total of six rounds of seat allotment, followed by CSAB (Central Seat Allocation Board) special rounds for vacant seats in NITs and GFTIs. Students are encouraged to keep their documents, such as the Class 12 marksheet, JEE admit card, and medical certificate, ready in the prescribed format to avoid any last-minute technical glitches.
