IIM Meghalaya Expansion: New Permanent Campus to be Inaugurated by Union Education Minister
With the move to the permanent campus, IIM Meghalaya has announced a 30% increase in the seat intake for its flagship Post Graduate Programme (PGP) in Management for the 2027-29 academic session. This expansion is part of the government's vision to make the North East a hub for educational excellence and professional training. The new campus also features executive housing, which will allow the institute to host international faculty and corporate leaders for short-term residency programs, thereby enhancing the global exposure of its students.
The Director of the institute, Prof. Amitabha Ghosh, stated, 'The permanent campus is not just a collection of buildings; it is an ecosystem designed to foster innovation and leadership. We are introducing new elective courses in 'Sustainable Management' and 'Digital Transformation' to reflect the changing needs of the global economy.' The institute also plans to launch a specialized PhD program in 'Himalayan Economics and Tribal Governance' to leverage its unique geographical location and provide research-based solutions for regional development.
Admissions to the expanded batch will continue to be through the Common Admission Test (CAT) 2026, which is expected to be held in November. However, the institute has revised its selection criteria to give more weightage to 'Gender Diversity' and 'Academic Diversity,' aiming to bring in students from varied backgrounds like Fine Arts, Law, and Medicine. The placement cell at IIM Meghalaya is also optimistic, noting that the permanent campus will provide better facilities for hosting recruiters during the summer and final placement seasons.
Local authorities believe that the growth of the IIM will have a positive spillover effect on the regional economy, creating jobs and encouraging local entrepreneurship. The inauguration ceremony will be attended by the Union Education Minister, the Chief Minister of Meghalaya, and several eminent industrialists. Students currently enrolled in the program are excited about the transition. 'Moving to the new campus means better sports facilities and a more vibrant campus life,' said Rahul Verma, a first-year student. The institute has ensured that the transition will be seamless, with all academic activities shifting to the new site by the start of the next semester in July.
