CLAT 2027: Consortium of NLUs to Introduce Regional Language Options for Entrance Test
According to the official statement released by the Consortium, the test will initially be available in Hindi, Kannada, Telugu, Tamil, and Marathi, in addition to English. The move is part of a broader effort to align legal education with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which promotes the use of mother tongues in higher education. The Consortium has formed a dedicated committee to oversee the translation of the question papers, ensuring that the legal nuances and complexity of the 'Legal Reasoning' section are maintained across all languages.
While the language of the entrance test is changing, the syllabus and the pattern of the exam will remain the same. The test will continue to evaluate candidates on English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques. For the regional language versions, the 'English Language' section will still be in English to test the candidates' proficiency in the language, which remains the primary language of the higher judiciary in India.
The legal fraternity has largely welcomed the move. 'This is a step toward democratizing legal education in India,' said Dr. Rameshwar Rao, a senior faculty member at a leading NLU. 'Many brilliant students are deterred from pursuing law because they feel intimidated by the English-only format of the entrance exam. By offering the test in regional languages, we are widening the talent pool and ensuring that the legal profession reflects the diversity of our country.' However, some experts have raised concerns about the availability of high-quality legal study materials in regional languages.
In addition to the language shift, the Consortium is also planning to increase the number of test centers in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities to further ease the process for aspirants. For the current 2026 batch, the counseling rounds are nearing completion, and the new academic session is set to begin in July. The notification for CLAT 2027, featuring the new language options, is expected to be released in August 2026.
Prospective candidates are advised to continue their preparation with a focus on reading comprehension and critical thinking. The Consortium will release sample papers in the new regional languages by early 2027 to help students familiarize themselves with the translated format. This transition marks a significant chapter in the history of legal entrance examinations in India, potentially reshaping the demographic profile of law schools across the country.
