CLAT 2027: Consortium of NLUs to Introduce New Regional Language Options for Entrance Test

The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has made a landmark decision to offer the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2027 in three additional regional languages: Hindi, Kannada, and Telugu. This decision, announced during the Consortium's annual meeting on April 15, 2026, aims to make legal education more accessible to students from diverse linguistic backgrounds and rural areas. Previously, CLAT was primarily conducted in English, which many argued created a barrier for students from non-English medium schools.

The move follows a series of recommendations from the Ministry of Education and various legal experts who have advocated for the regionalization of professional entrance exams. The Consortium clarified that while the question paper will be available in these languages, the core syllabus and the difficulty level of the exam will remain uniform across all versions. The 'Legal Reasoning' and 'Logical Reasoning' sections will be carefully translated by a panel of linguistics and legal experts to ensure that no nuances are lost in translation.

'This is a historic step towards democratizing legal education in India,' said the President of the Consortium. 'By providing the option to take the exam in regional languages, we are ensuring that merit is not hindered by language proficiency. However, students should note that the medium of instruction in most NLUs will continue to be English, and the universities will provide additional English language support to those who need it during their first year of the 5-year LLB program.'

While this change will be fully implemented for the CLAT 2027 cycle (to be held in December 2026), the Consortium has also announced a pilot project for the current year where mock tests in these languages will be made available on the official portal. This will allow prospective candidates to familiarize themselves with the terminology used in the translated papers. The registration for CLAT 2027 is expected to begin in July 2026, and the official notification containing the detailed syllabus and language-specific instructions will be released by June.

Legal education experts have welcomed the move but also pointed out the challenges. 'Translating complex legal propositions into regional languages without losing their technical meaning is a mammoth task,' noted Kavita Reddy, a law professor. 'The Consortium must ensure that the quality of translation is impeccable to avoid any ambiguity during the exam.' Despite these challenges, the student community has largely hailed the decision as a progressive step towards an inclusive education system. The move is expected to significantly increase the number of applicants from state board schools in Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and the Hindi-speaking belt.
