The Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) is expected to announce the exam date and registration schedule for CLAT 2027 by early August 2026. While the current academic year's admissions are still being finalized in some states, the early announcement is part of the Consortium's initiative to provide law aspirants with a clear roadmap for their preparation. The Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) is the mandatory entrance exam for 22 participating NLUs and several other private law colleges across the country.

The CLAT 2027 exam is likely to be held in the first week of December 2026, continuing the trend of conducting the exam in the December preceding the admission year. This schedule allows students to focus on their board exams in the February-March period without the added stress of a major competitive entrance test. The exam tests candidates on five key areas: English Language, Current Affairs including General Knowledge, Legal Reasoning, Logical Reasoning, and Quantitative Techniques. The level of the test is usually pegged at the Class 12 difficulty level, except for the Quantitative section which follows Class 10 standards.

Last year, the Consortium introduced several changes to the exam pattern, including a reduction in the number of questions to 120, intended to make the test more accessible and less about sheer reading speed. "The shift towards a more comprehension-based and reasoning-heavy paper has been well-received by both students and academicians. It tests the actual aptitude required for a legal career rather than rote memorization of case laws," explained Adv. Rajesh Talwar, a legal education expert based in Bengaluru. He noted that the competition for top NLUs like NLSIU Bangalore and NALSAR Hyderabad continues to intensify.

Aspiring lawyers are advised to start their preparation by keeping a close watch on national and international current affairs, as this section carries significant weightage and can be a major differentiator in the final merit list. Reading editorials from reputable newspapers and legal journals can help in developing the necessary speed and comprehension skills required for the Legal Reasoning section. Many coaching institutes have already launched their 'Foundation Batches' for CLAT 2027, targeting students currently in Class 11 and 12 who want a head start.

The official notification will also provide details on the application fee, reservation policies, and the list of participating institutes. With law becoming an increasingly popular career choice in India, the number of applicants for CLAT is expected to cross the 1.1-lakh mark this year. Candidates are encouraged to regularly check the official Consortium website for the latest updates, official sample papers, and the updated list of test centers to ensure they are well-prepared for the registration process.
