The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has officially announced the implementation of a biannual board exam system starting from the 2026-27 academic session. This move, which has been under discussion since the unveiling of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, aims to reduce the high-stress environment associated with 'one-off' annual examinations. Under the new system, students in Classes 10 and 12 will have the opportunity to take exams twice a year, with the board retaining their best score for the final marksheet.\n\nThe first set of exams is likely to be held in November-December, followed by the traditional February-March window. While the board clarified that appearing for both sessions is not mandatory, it provides a crucial safety net for students who may fall ill or perform poorly due to unforeseen circumstances during the first attempt. CBSE Chairperson Nidhi Chhibber noted that the curriculum is being restructured into smaller modules to facilitate this change without increasing the overall study load on students.\n\n'The transition to a biannual system is about moving away from rote learning and towards competency-based assessment,' said Dr. Ramesh Pokhriyal, a member of the education advisory committee. 'By giving students more chances, we are encouraging a deeper understanding of subjects rather than the pressure of memorizing an entire year's syllabus for a single three-hour test.' The board has also released a revised syllabus for the current 2026-27 batch, which includes more vocational subjects and interdisciplinary projects.\n\nSchools across the country have expressed mixed reactions. While many principals welcome the reduction in student anxiety, some have raised concerns regarding the logistical challenges of conducting two national-level exams in a single year. 'We will need more resources, better scheduling, and a faster evaluation process to ensure that the results of the first term do not delay the start of the second term,' said Meera Nair, Principal of a prominent school in Bengaluru. To address these concerns, CBSE plans to increase the use of AI-driven evaluation tools for objective sections of the paper.\n\nParents and students are encouraged to attend the upcoming webinars hosted by the CBSE regional offices to understand the credit system and how the best-of-two scores will be calculated. Detailed guidelines on internal assessments, which will continue to hold significant weightage, will be sent to all affiliated schools by the end of June 2026. This reform marks one of the biggest changes in the Indian schooling system in decades, aiming to align it with global educational standards.
