The Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) is an autonomous government body responsible for the regulation and supervision of school education in the state of Mizoram, India. Established under the MBSE Act of 1975, the board is tasked with prescribing courses of instruction, conducting examinations, and granting diplomas and certificates to successful candidates.

MBSE covers primary, middle, and high school education, with its most significant responsibilities being the conduct of the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) and Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC) examinations. The board emphasizes quality education and strives to modernize the curriculum to meet national standards.

The MBSE was established in 1975 by the Government of Mizoram through the Mizoram Board of School Education Act. Before the formation of the board, schools in Mizoram were affiliated with the Assam Board (SEBA). MBSE has jurisdiction exclusively over the state of Mizoram. All government schools, government-aided schools, and recognized private schools within the eight districts of Mizoram are affiliated with this board.

The Class 10 examination, known as the High School Leaving Certificate (HSLC), is a crucial milestone for students in Mizoram. The exam typically covers five main subjects: Mizo (or alternative English), English, Mathematics, Science, and Social Science.

The MBSE HSLC Syllabus is designed to align with the NCERT framework. Grading is based on a nine-point scale ranging from A1 to E2, where a minimum of 33% is required in both theory and practical/internal components to pass.

The Class 12 examination is known as the Higher Secondary School Leaving Certificate (HSSLC). It is divided into three streams: Science, Arts, and Commerce.

• Science Stream: Physics, Chemistry, Biology/Mathematics, English.
• Arts Stream: History, Political Science, Economics, Sociology, Geography, Mizo.
• Commerce Stream: Accountancy, Business Studies, Economics, Mathematics.

The evaluation includes theory papers of 70-80 marks and practical/project work of 20-30 marks. Students must secure 33% marks in each subject to be declared successful. Detailed sample papers are available on the official portal to help students understand the weightage of different topics.

For the academic year 2025-2026, the MBSE 2026 Exam Schedule is expected to follow the traditional timeline:

• HSLC (Class 10) Exams: Expected to commence in the last week of February 2026 and conclude by mid-March 2026.
• HSSLC (Class 12) Exams: Expected to start in the first week of March 2026 and end by early April 2026.
• Practical Exams: Usually conducted in February 2026, prior to the theory examinations.

The official Date Sheet is typically released in December 2025 or January 2026.

To appear for the MBSE HSLC or HSSLC exams, students must meet the following criteria:

• Regular Students: Must have a minimum of 75% attendance and must have passed the previous class (Class 9 for HSLC and Class 11 for HSSLC) from a recognized school.
• Private Candidates: Candidates who have not attended regular school but meet the age and prior qualification criteria set by the board.

Registration is usually managed through the respective schools. Schools submit the student data to the board portal, and the board issues a unique registration number to every candidate. Private candidates must register directly through the official MBSE portal during the prescribed window.

The MBSE usually declares the HSLC and HSSLC results in May. Students can check their results on the MBSE Results Page or via SMS services.

Passing Criteria:

• A student must secure at least 33% marks in each individual subject (both theory and practical).
• An overall aggregate of 33% is required to receive the pass certificate.
• Students who fail in one or two subjects may be eligible for Compartmental Examinations held shortly after the main results are announced.

Meritorious students who perform exceptionally well in the MBSE HSLC and HSSLC exams are eligible for various state and central government scholarships, including:

• National Merit Scholarship: Awarded to top rankers of the HSSLC examination.
• State Merit Scholarship: Provided by the Government of Mizoram to encourage higher education among local students.
• Post-Matric Scholarship for ST Students: Since Mizoram has a high tribal population, most students are eligible for this central government scheme to cover tuition fees and maintenance.
