NIMCET 2026: NIT Jamshedpur Announces Changes in Exam Pattern and Weightage
The NIMCET 2026 will continue to be a 120-minute computer-based test, but the distribution of marks has been recalibrated. While Mathematics remains the most significant section with 40% weightage, the reduction in the weightage of the 'General English' section has allowed for the expansion of the 'Logical Reasoning' and 'Computer Awareness' segments. According to the official brochure, the objective is to ensure that students entering the NITs have a stronger grasp of computational thinking rather than just mathematical proficiency.
Dr. Rajesh Gupta, the organizing chairperson for NIMCET 2026, explained the rationale behind these updates. 'The IT industry is moving toward specialized roles in AI and Cloud Computing. We found that students who were excellent at Mathematics but lacked basic computer logic struggled in the first year of the MCA programme. By increasing the weightage of Computer Awareness, we are encouraging students to build a more holistic foundation before they join the NITs,' he stated in a press briefing.
The application process for NIMCET 2026 opened on March 10 and will conclude on April 20, 2026. Eligibility criteria remain largely the same, requiring a minimum of 60% marks (or 6.5 CGPA) in B.Sc., B.Sc. (Hons), BCA, or BIT. However, the board has clarified that students who are appearing for their final year examinations in 2026 are also eligible to apply, provided they submit their final results by September 2026. This provides relief to thousands of students whose final semester exams have been delayed due to local administrative reasons.
The exam is scheduled to be held on June 7, 2026, across 30 cities in India. Results are expected by the end of June, followed by a centralized counseling process for admission into the 9 participating NITs (Agartala, Allahabad, Bhopal, Jamshedpur, Kurukshetra, Raipur, Surathkal, Tiruchirappalli, and Warangal). Aspirants are advised to practice with the new mock test series that NIT Jamshedpur has uploaded on the official NIMCET portal to get accustomed to the revised weightage and question types.
