The grueling admission cycle for the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) is reaching its climax as the premier business schools conclude their final selection rounds for the Post Graduate Programme (PGP) batch of 2026-28. Over the last two months, thousands of shortlisted candidates have participated in Personal Interviews (PI) and Writing Ability Tests (WAT) conducted both physically and virtually across major Indian cities. The 'BLACKI' group of IIMs—Bangalore, Lucknow, Ahmedabad, Calcutta, Kozhikode, and Indore—are expected to begin releasing their final admission offers by the last week of April 2026.

This year’s admission season has been characterized by an increased emphasis on profile diversity. While CAT 2025 scores remained the primary filter, several IIMs have adjusted their selection criteria to give higher weightage to non-engineering backgrounds and professional work experience. IIM Ahmedabad, for instance, saw a notable rise in candidates from liberal arts, medicine, and law backgrounds being called for interviews. This shift aligns with the global trend of creating diverse MBA cohorts that bring varied perspectives to the classroom.

Furthermore, the 2026-28 cycle saw the introduction of sustainability and ethical leadership as key themes during the WAT rounds. Candidates were often asked to deliberate on India's 'Net Zero' goals or the ethical implications of Artificial Intelligence in corporate governance. 'The quality of candidates this year has been exceptional. We are looking for individuals who are not just mathematically proficient but also socially aware and adaptable,' noted a faculty member from the IIM Calcutta admissions committee.

Once the results are announced, successful candidates will typically have a week to accept the offer and pay the initial commitment fee. Waitlists will move in subsequent rounds throughout May and June as candidates choose between multiple offers. The new academic session for most IIMs is slated to begin in the first or second week of July 2026. In addition to the IIMs, other top-tier institutions like FMS Delhi, SPJIMR Mumbai, and MDI Gurgaon are also expected to finalize their lists in the same timeframe.

For those who do not secure a seat in the top-tier institutes, experts suggest looking at the 'New' and 'Baby' IIMs, which have shown significant growth in placements and industry reputation over the last five years. The Common Admission Process (CAP) for the newer IIMs was also completed recently, with results expected to follow the older IIMs by early May. Aspirants are advised to keep their documents ready, including updated work experience certificates and academic transcripts, for the final verification process during registration.
