CLAT 2027: Consortium of NLUs to Introduce Ethics and Legal Reasoning Case Studies

In a landmark decision aimed at identifying candidates with a stronger aptitude for legal ethics, the Consortium of National Law Universities (NLUs) has announced a revision to the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT) 2027 pattern. Starting with the upcoming exam, the Legal Reasoning section will now include a dedicated sub-section on 'Ethical Dilemmas and Professional Conduct.' This move is designed to test the moral reasoning and decision-making capabilities of future lawyers, moving beyond mere knowledge of statutes and case laws.
The CLAT 2027 exam is scheduled to be held on the first Sunday of December 2026. The application portal is set to open on September 25, 2026, and will remain active until the end of October. The Consortium President, Prof. Sudhir Krishnaswamy, explained that the legal profession in India is undergoing a transformation, and the entrance exam must reflect the evolving needs of the judiciary and corporate legal sectors. "We want to ensure that students entering law schools possess not just the analytical skills, but also the ethical foundation required for the practice of law," he stated during a press briefing in Bengaluru.
The new section will consist of 15-20 marks within the existing 120-mark framework. Instead of theoretical questions, students will be presented with complex scenarios involving conflicts of interest, client confidentiality, and social justice issues. They will be required to choose the most appropriate course of action based on the Principles of Natural Justice and the Bar Council of India's code of conduct. This change has prompted coaching institutes to quickly revise their study materials and mock tests to include these new case-study-based questions.
Despite the addition of the ethics component, the overall duration of the exam remains two hours. The Consortium has also reaffirmed that there will be no changes to the English Language, Current Affairs, and Logical Reasoning sections. However, the weightage of Quantitative Techniques has been slightly reduced to accommodate the new sub-section. Aspirants are advised to read introductory texts on legal philosophy and the history of the Indian judicial system to better prepare for the new format.
Registration fees for CLAT 2027 have been kept stable at ₹4,000 for general candidates and ₹3,500 for SC/ST/BPL candidates. The Consortium is also expanding its reach by adding 10 new test centers in Tier-3 cities across the Northeast and Jammu & Kashmir. This initiative aims to increase the diversity of the student body within the 24 participating NLUs. As the legal field becomes increasingly competitive, this shift towards ethical evaluation marks a significant milestone in Indian legal education.
