CLAT 2027: Consortium of NLUs Announces Exam Date; New Legal Reasoning Modules Added

The Consortium of National Law Universities has officially released the notification for CLAT 2027, setting the exam date for the first Sunday of December 2026. This early announcement is part of the Consortium’s effort to align the law admission cycle with the global academic calendar. Registration for the exam will begin on September 1, 2026, and will remain open until the end of October. The exam will be held in a pen-and-paper format across more than 130 centers in India.
Advait Kulkarni, a representative of the Consortium, highlighted a significant update to the syllabus. In response to the rapidly changing legal landscape in India, the 'Legal Reasoning' section will now feature passages related to the Digital Personal Data Protection Act and new environmental regulations. 'We want to test the candidates' ability to comprehend and apply new-age laws rather than just their knowledge of the Constitution and Torts,' Kulkarni explained. The number of questions remains 120, to be answered in 120 minutes.
The competition for the 24 participating NLUs has intensified, with over 75,000 students expected to compete for approximately 3,000 undergraduate seats. This year, NLU Tripura and the newly established NLU in Pune will also be part of the centralized counselling process. The Consortium has also introduced a 'Financial Aid' scheme for students from the EWS category, which will waive 50% of the registration fee for eligible candidates.
Preparation experts suggest that the key to cracking CLAT 2027 will be a strong grasp of current affairs and high reading speed. Since the exam is heavily passage-based, students are encouraged to read editorials from leading national dailies daily. The Consortium will also release three official mock tests in October and November to help students familiarize themselves with the updated question pattern. Results are expected to be declared by the last week of December, allowing for a smooth counselling process in January 2027.
